UNP cries foul, seeks Mano’s help

UPFA forcibly enters sealed rooms against Mayor’s wish

Two rooms at the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) taken over on October 31 by a group of UPFA Councillors, claiming that they were for the ‘Leader of the Opposition of the CMC’ Milinda Moragoda, were sealed by the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) on Thursday (3).

However, yesterday morning, the UPFA councillors broke open the doors of the rooms and occupied them. They said they would have a groups meeting last evening.

The UNPcouncillors are of the view that the UPFA Group Leader Moragoda has no right to occupy a room in the CMC as there is no such post according to the Municipal Council Ordinance.

Mayor A. J. M. Muzammil (UNP) assumed duties on Nov. 01 and the Council is scheduled to have its inaugural meeting on Tuesday (8).The UNP has 24 councillors, UPFA 16, DPF 6, SLMC 2, DUA 2, JVP 1, while the two Independent Groups have one each.

Mayor Muzammil has written to DPF Leader Mano Ganeshan requesting the latter’s support to carry out duties of the CMC smoothly. He has stated that the people of Colombo rejected the UPFA, which is attempting to disrupt the administration of the CMC in retaliation.

Muzammil has said in his letter Tamils, Muslims and other communities voted against the UPFA and that a majority of Tamils have accepted Ganeshan’s leadership and given the DPF more representation in the CMC.

The UNP needs the unstinted support of the DPF to serve the people of Colombo, the Mayor has said.
