Sri Lanka immigration officials have arrested a group of 80 people including 22 Afghanis, 5 Pakistanis while they were waiting in Colombo to migrate to Australia, according to the Government Information Department.
A Pakistani man suspected of running the people-smuggling operation has also been arrested.
Sri Lanka's High Commissioner in Australia Thisara Samarasinghe referring to the recent spate of arrests of illegal migrants attempting to enter Australia on boats has said that the illegal migrants seeking asylum are being paid to make the perilous journey to the country by some groups.
The Sri Lankan Police are conducting further investigations.
