TNA parliamentarian M.A.Sumanthiran says that the Army is demanding that at least one cemetery coming under the Jaffna Karaveddy Pradeshiya Sabha be handed over to them, but he emphasizes that the public should not fear the demands of the Army and not one of them should hand over any of their lands to the Army.
The Army which went to the Karaveddy Pradeshiya Sabha yesterday had demanded that at least one of the cemetries coming under the Pradeshiya Sabha be handed over to them.
The Pradeshiya Sabha had replied that the cemetries are under its control and cannot be handed over to the Army. The Army had then asked for the Pradeshiya Sabha to give its intention in writing, and the Pradeshiya Sabha had agreed to give their intention in writing
There is no need for the public to give their lands because the army was asking for it. During ther days of the emergency the army could do whatever they wanted. But today when emergency laws have been revoked, the public need not fear in any way.
We can engage in legal activities only if the army settles down in people’s lands, as such the public should not fear for the mere demanding by the army, I wish to emphasize this point.
If the army acts in an unjust manner, we are ready to face the consequences, whatever it may be, through legal means, said Sumanthiran.
