Sri Lankan court issues order preventing private media from telecasting Olympics

A Sri Lankan court yesterday issued an interim injunction preventing the private MTV and MBC media networks from telecasting the 2012 London Olympics.

Colombo Commercial High Court Judge Gamini Amarasekera considering a petition filed by Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC), the national television network of Sri Lanka issued the order preventing the issuing of London Olympic TV rights to any Television station in Sri Lanka except Rupavahini.

The judge has pointed out that the Rupavahini Corporation had the right to telecast the Games as the traditional broadcaster of the games and issued the interim injunction, effective till August 27th.

The court on May 17 issued an enjoining order preventing the Asia Pacific Broadcasting (APC) from giving broadcasting rights of the Olympic Games this year to any television station in Sri Lanka other than the SLRC.
