The police have sternly warned rental companies not to rent cars out to customers without checking their identity following the involvement of rental cars in several serious crimes committed recently.

Citing the recent robbery in Mavil Aru in the East where the police arrested a gang of robbers posing as policemen as an example, the Police Media Spokesman, Superintendent of Police Ajith Rohana has told the state-run English weekly The Observer that renal vehicles had been involved in various crimes in the recent past.

In another incident the two persons have been killed near a church in Colombo at night by robbers travelling in a rental vehicle.

The Police Spokesman has warned that owners and employees of the rental companies would be held liable if their vehicles are used to commit crimes. They can be detained by the police or produced in court when their vehicles are involved in criminal cases, the police have warned.

The Spokesman has said that the owners can be charged for abetting a crime if they rent the vehicles to people without a valid driver's license.
