Govt. does not have a clear-cut solution to the issue

The leader of the Democratic People’s Front, Mano Ganesan yesterday said that although the government from time to time claimed that the problems the Tamil political detainees were faced with would be addressed, it was without a solution.

He said that all the Tamil political parties were anxious to know the Supreme Court ruling on the death of the LTTE suspect, Ganesan Nimalaruban today. Nimalaruban, a detainee at the Vavuniya prison died on July 04 after allegedly being attacked during an attempt to rescue two jailers taken hostage by the detainees.

According to Ganesan recently the authorities had requested the consent of political detainees in certain prisons to be transferred elsewhere. At one point the government had also come up with the idea to set up special court houses to hear their cases.

"Establishment of court houses is a lengthy procedure with plenty of logistical and legal issues to be sorted out" Ganeshan said.

Currently, there were nearly 900 Tamil political detainees in the prisons countrywide and some of them had been held for as long as 15 years, he said, requesting the government to solve the problem urgently.
