Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekera says he would be compelled to make a decision about his political future if the party leadership fails to respond to his conditions.
 
The legislator made this comment following rumors of an attempt by him to defect to the government.
 
Jayasekera however, denied any plans to join the government, but told ColomboPage that he was displeased with the actions of the party leadership.
 
He criticized the latest amendment to the party Constitution proposed by the party leader that the tenure of the party leader would be six years.
 
"This cannot be allowed. It would be the end of the UNP and we will never be able to defeat the government," he said.
 
UNP MP Kabir Hashim, Malik Samarawickrema and Sagala Ratnayake have met with Jayasekera in a bid to resolve the current crisis. Reportedly the trio has asked the legislator not to join the government.
 
Jayasekera has informed them that the decision to extend the tenure of the party leader to six years should be reversed. Furthermore, UNP MP Ashok Abeysinghe should be reappointed as the party's Kurunegala organizer, organizers in the Kurunegala District should not be appointed according to favoritism but according to strengths and ability get elected at an election and that a broad united front to be formed to win elections.
 
He has also demanded the leadership to drop disciplinary inquiries against party members.
 
Jayasekera said that Samarawickrema has promised to discuss the matter with party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe.
