Jaffna Teaching Hospital head transferred

Jaffna Teaching Hospital Director Dr. Ms. Bavani Pashupathyraja will be transferred to the Health Ministry, until the formal conclusion of the inquiry into the alleged misappropriation of 16 iron girders and a generator belonging to the institution.

The preliminary inquiry was conducted and the Public Service Commission (PSC) has given some guidelines to the Health Ministry to transfer, interdict or send on compulsory leave Dr. Ms. Pashupathyraja pending the conclusion of the full inquiry.

Secretary to the Health Ministry Dr. Nihal Jayathilaka when contacted said that the formal inquiry would commence shortly on the missing 16 iron girders and a generator of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. It was not appropriate to keep the Hospital Director in charge of the place until the formal inquiry was over as there was the possibility of her influencing the witnesses.

He said that the GMOA had launched some trade union action against Dr. Ms. Pashupathyraja who is alleged to have been involved in the missing hospital properties. She would be assigned to the Health Ministry for a responsible duty. "The Ministry decided to temporarily assign Dr. Ms. Pashupathyraja to the Ministry until the formal inquiry is over, because the GMOA and her opponents are under the impression that if she remains in the hospital, she can influence the witnesses to give evidence to her advantage. If she is not found guilty she will be transferred back to the Jaffna Hospital once again," Dr. Jayathilaka stressed.

He added that during her short transfer to the Ministry, she would be assigned to cover highly important duties pertaining to the Northern Province.
