Fonseka tells people not to be misled by cardboard heroes

Former Army commander and DNA leader Gen Sarath Fonseka yesterday asked people not to be cheated by cardboard heroes who come forward as patriots.

He made this request addressing a rally held opposite the Ambalangoda Bus Stand to express his gratitude to all those who supported him at the last presidential election.

Fonseka said that he had shed his blood thrice in the war to save the motherland from terrorists. The country that had been saved so had now become the property of some rulers who had deprived the people of their rights and democracy. It was his duty to restore democracy in this land through the strength of the people.

The general arrived in a motorcade from Kurundugaha area to the rally held at the centre of Ambalangoda town and was received with garlands and sheaves of betel.

Fonseka was thankful to his people for supporting him. "People flowed like a river to vote for me. The rulers who got angered after seeing this victory of ours incarcerated me in prison. Our vehicles, houses were set in fire. We could not see our children for years. I was not given a chance to address people for years."

He said that at the first chance to meet the public he went from town to town and witnessed the very same public support to his cause. "I am ready to sacrifice my life to serve you. We must send home the rulers who abuse children and rule by means of thuggery. I am ready to go back to prison in the name of people," he sad.
