Political rivalry between Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillaiyan and Vinayagamurthi Muralitharan alias Karuna has heightened in the East as Karuna is campaigning for his sister to be the next chief minister.
“The present chief minister (CM) of the Eastern Province Sivenesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillaiyan’s days are numbered and the next CM would be Rudhramala Ganabhaskaran if she bags the highest number of votes at the upcoming provincial elections,” claims deputy minister of Resettlement and vice president of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), Vinayagamurthi Muralitharan.
The minister said the present CM is ‘not suitable for the post’ but he would work hard to campaign for his sister to make her the next CM, she being the only woman contestant.
“The UPFA is backed by the TMVP and their votes are very essential at this moment,” he opined.
He said that so far five cases of election violence have been reported in the East. However, everything is going smoothly, he averred.
He added: “We should be vigilant about the Muslims coming in independently to contest. It could split the votes drastically but I hope they will finally tie up with the UPFA.”
