Violence unleashed against journalists since completion of the presidential election ‐ International media groups and human rights organisations‐
01 February 10 12:55 pm (BST)

International media groups and human rights organisations have criticized the government for unleashing intimidation against the media after completion of the presidential election.

A New York based media group has highlighted intimidation against journalists and media organisations who had expressed their support for General Fonseka during election campaigns.

A senior official from the organisation to protect journalists is reported to have written to the president to put an end to this unsavoury history following journalists in Srilanka and urged the president to make necessary changes to put an end to this culture, using his powers.

Meanwhile Paris based RSF have also urged the president to bring an end to arrests of journalists from private and overseas media organisations.

They pointed out this cult following right after the president being re‐elected and said this could tarnish his stature and also bring in damage to the political structure of the country.

They pointed out on a political reporter going missing two days prior to the elections and another journalist being arrested.

Cartoonist Prageeth Eknaligoda went missing two days prior to the election and up to now there has been no information on him.

Official statistics reveal so far nine journalists have been killed and a further 27 attacked in the last three years in the island.

Human rights groups also urged to end the violence against journalists after the completion of the presidential election and pointed out on some journalists being interrogated and web sites being blocked.

They also said those who make critical comments against the government or the president would once again be subjected to intimidation and added officials too were misusing their powers.
