The government is perplexed over the identities of two Sri Lankan refugees after they were charged with giving false names in passport applications.
Fareed Sayed Rahmathulla, 30, and Saki Mohamed Assim, 33, were arrested by federal agents on Tuesday after they were granted Australian passports using false names and other bogus information.
The two men were arrested after a joint federal police and Australian Passport Office investigation. They were subsequently charged with 10 offences relating to providing false information and travelling under false names.
The pair were refused bail in Sydney’s Central Local Court yesterday morning.
“We are working with the Australian Federal Police and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship to confirm their identity,” a foreign affairs spokeswoman said.
The men, who shared a flat in the south‐western Sydney suburb of Auburn, will remain on remand until their next court appearance on April 14.
