A heated exchange of words took place in Parliament today over the alleged conspiracy to assassinate President Maithripala Sirisena and former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Joint opposition leader Dinesh Gunawardana raised the issue in Parliament today and sought a response from the Government on the steps being taken to investigate the allegations.

Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) Director, DIG Nalaka de Silva is being investigated over the allegations.

DIG Nalaka de Silva was yesterday transferred to the IT division of the Police pending the conclusion of the investigations.

Minister of Law and Order Ranjith Madduma Bandara told Parliament that investigations into the allegations are ongoing and activist Namal Kumara, who had made the revelation, had been questioned by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

The Minister said that the President has enough security while the security of the former Defence Secretary will also be looked into.

The opposition however said that the matter is very serious and must be looked into more seriously.

Some members of the opposition and even in the Government, called for the arrest of DIG Nalaka de Silva, pending the conclusion of the investigations.

State Minister Sriyani Wijewickrama also called for the removal of Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara saying he did not have the confidence of the entire Government.
