Joint opposition says no mandate for new Constitution

by editorenglish

The joint opposition says the Government does not have a mandate for a new Constitution.

Joint opposition member, Professor G.L Peiris said that President Maithripala Sirisena never spoke of a new Constitution when he contested the 2015 Presidential election.

He said the joint opposition opposes the interim report submitted to Parliament on a new Constitution.

The former Foreign Minister also alleged that the Government was looking to draft a new Constitution to pacify the international community.
