JVP demands President to abolish executive powers as promised

by editorenglish

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today demanded President Maithripala Sirisena to abolish the Executive Presidency as promised before he won the 2015 election.

JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that the main election pledge given by the Government was that the executive powers of the President will be abolished.

He said that through the 19th Amendment the Government only amended the powers of the Executive Presidential system.

“But the President was given a mandate to abolish the Executive Presidency,” Anura Kumara Dissanayake said.

As a result, Anura Kumara Dissanayake says the JVP will launch a campaign to push for the Executive Presidency to be abolished.

He also said that the JVP has had talks with the Tamil National Alliance, the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and the Communist Party on a new Constitution.

Dissanayake says the JVP also hopes to meet President Maithripala Sirisena in this regard. Courtesy: Colombo Gazette
