LTTE suspect in Piliyandala bomb blast sentenced for life

A Sri Lankan court today sentenced a LTTE suspect for life imprisonment for conspiring and abetting to explode a claymore mine targeting a commuter bus at the Piliyandala bus stand in 2008, which killed 26 people and injured scores.

The Colombo High Court judge Piyasena Ranasinghe sentenced the accused S. Ananda Sudahar alias Lorence David Raja to life imprisonment for his role in the attack.

Delivering the sentence after a lengthy trial, Judge Ranasinghe noted that the prosecution has proven its case against the accused the guilty of beyond a reasonable doubt.

The accused had been charged on 94 counts under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

The bomb exploded inside a Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) belonging to Kesbewa Depot at the public bus stand in Piliyandala on 25 April 2008 during the evening rush hour traffic. The bomb was hidden on the baggage rack, behind the driver�s seat of the packed bus. The explosion took place when the bus stopped at the bus stand.

The bombing killed 26 and injured at least 64. The dead included a Buddhist monk and students returning from tuition classes.
