Opposition leader Mahinda Rajapaksa had talks with the UN Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka Hanaa Singer at his residence.

Rajapaksa’s office said that at the meeting Singer stated that she is a strong believer of south- south cooperation and said that Sri Lanka would be a great role model as she has set a great example in achieving the SDGs set out by the UN.

“The current political environment of Sri Lanka was also discussed about. I pointed out the postponement of the provincial council elections for over a year and the government did not seem to have any intention of holding the long overdue elections either,” Rajapaksa was quoted as saying by his office.

Rajapaksa was also asked by Singer asked about his vision for the future of Sri Lanka. He had said that two key issues that would require immediate attention would be the economy and reconciliation.

The former President said that he was of the view that with discipline and leadership a suitable solution could be found for both issues.
