Sri Lanka assures India on ongoing projects, fishermen issue

Sri Lanka and India today had talks on the progress on Indian funded projects as well as on the fishermen issue.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe met Indian Foreign Secretary Vijay Keshav Gokhale today and had wide ranging discussions.

The Prime Minister’s office said that Wickremsinghe assured India that several Indian funded projects will get off the ground this year.

Both sides also discussed matters related to the proposed Economic and Technology Co-operation Agreement (ETCA).

“Strong regional relationships are integral to our plans to grow our economy and strengthen our position as an Indian Ocean economic hub. Today I met with the Indian Foreign Secretary, Mr Vijay Keshav Gokhale, as we continue to build our relationship with India,” the Prime Minister tweeted after the meeting.

The Prime Minister’s office said that both sides also had talks on the Indian funded housing project in the North for war displaced families.

The issue on Indian fishermen crossing into Sri Lankan waters was also discussed and it was noted that Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody will be released.
