Sri Lanka’s Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) led National People’s Power called on public for building a strong opposition at the upcoming general election.

Addressing media conference today, the JVP Leader Parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake said the government that was lost to the people could only be influenced by the people if there is a strong opposition.

The JVP leader pointed out that the main opposition United National Party (UNP) is in a crisis that cannot be resolved and cannot build a strong opposition. There was no unity in the party after the Presidential election. As such there is a dire need to build a strong opposition.

At the news briefing MP Dissanayake called on the Government to take action against the rice mafia.

The JVP Leader said in increase in the prices of rice does not at all benefit the farmer, but the rice mafia benefits from it. He explained that there is a monopoly of rice within the market and although the price of paddy has come down, the price of rice had increased.

“The increase in the price of rice is not at all received by the farmer community It is this monopoly that decides the price of paddy in its purchases.”

He said the Government should dismantle the rice monopoly by few millers to overcome the distortion in the price of paddy and rice.
