Two female deminers injured in landmine explosion in northern Sri Lanka

Two female deminers belonging to a non-governmental organization have been injured in a mine explosion on Thursday in Muhamalai, Kilinochchi area in Sri Lanka’s North.

The deminers have received serious injuries during a demining operation when a landmine accidently exploded, the police said.

The injured women have been admitted to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital and they are being treated at the intensive care unit of the hospital, hospital sources said.

The victims identified as Gunanendran Renuka (25) and M. Mekala (26) are residents of North and are working for an international demining organization. The mine clearing operations have resumed yesterday after halting operations during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

A group of youths who were also involved in the operation had rushed the victims to the hospital immediately after the incident in an ambulance belonging to the organization.

Both women had sustained severe injuries in the head and chest, Medical Officer in-charge of the ICU of the hospital said.

Pallai Police and the foreign organization are conducting further investigations into the incident.
