Following the sudden political developments in Sri Lanka government, the United States called on all parties of the government to act according to the Constitution, refrain from violence and follow due process.

The U.S. Department of State in a Twitter post called on Sri Lankan government to uphold its Geneva commitments to human rights, reform, accountability, justice, and reconciliation.

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena Friday sacked the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and appointed former president Mahinda Rajapaksa as the new Prime Minister. The political maneuver is expected to create constitutional and economic crisis.
