Land surveying activities are going to be taken place with the intention of seizing the 617 acres of land including the land in Vattuvakal area where the Navy Base namely “Gota Navy Base” is located, according to the Regional Land Surveying Department. Notice stating the above mentioned Land surveying activities has been posted in Mullivaikal East.
It is further announced that this land surveying activities are going to be taken place as per the order made by Land Surveying Officer following the request made by the Secretary of Defense Ministry.
These Land Surveying activities are going to be taken place in order to permanently seize the land fenced by the Navy in Mullivaikal East, Vattuvakal.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan government has been making attempts for a couple of years to seize these lands. The attempts made not only by the Rajapakse regime but also by the new regime have been given up following the fierce opposition of the people.
In the meantime, notice letter dated 15.02.2018 stated that land surveying activities are being taken place on 22nd of this month in order to seize these lands permanently. State land surveyor further stated in this letter that those who claim their ownership of the lands where Navy Base is located are asked to come with the relevant documents.
“Gota Navy Base” is located in 626 acres of lands including the privately owned lands and state lands where people had been living. Most of these areas were grabbed after being barbed wired.
Consequently, about 500 families have lost their habitat. People demanded the authorities several times to give these lands back to them. The people of these lands have been wandering as refugees around the streets and staying at their relatives’ homes as landless.
The people of Mullivaikal East, Vattuvakal, who stated that they are hugely disappointed as the government for good governance has also been making attempts to seize their lands even after they casted their votes to Maithripala Srisena, added that silence being kept by the Tamil leadership in this regard make them feel very sad.
The people told the Global Tamil News that they are not going to allow their lands to be seized at any rate. Also, the people emphasized that they would stage a protest fiercely opposing the attempt of surveying their lands on 22 nd of this month.
