Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena today visited the north in an observation tour engaging in several public activities.
President Sirisena toured the Shanthikulam area in Kilinochchi and met with the residents. Engaging in friendly conversations with the people, the President Inquired about their wellbeing and discussed their problems.
The residents, who thanked the President for the development in the area, presented an account of the development problems in the area to the President. The Principal of the Shanthikulam School apprised the President of the shortcomings in the school.
The President instructed the Northern Province Governor Reginald Cooray to look into the issues promptly and to find solutions to these problems.
President Sirisena also opened a sluice gate and declared open the Iranamadu reservoir in Kilinochchi which has reached spill levels for the first time today after its reconstruction.
Following the implementation of the Moragahakanda Reservoir project, the President has taken steps to reconstruct the Iranamadu reservoir, which irrigates 21,000 acres of land, at a cost of Rs. 2.178 billion.
The tank bund and the sluice gates of the Iranamadu reservoir, which was 34 feet in depth before the reconstruction, were in a dilapidated condition due to the damage caused by the war.
The Iranamadu reservoir was about to spill over due to torrential rains in the recent past. Governor of the Northern Province Reginald Cooray monitored the situation and made arrangements for the President to open the sluice gates.
Northern Province Governor Reginald Cooray, MPs Nimal Siripala de Silva, Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Sarath Amunugama, S. B. Nawinna, and Angajan Ramanathan, joined the President.
