The Army troops have arrested a suspect with 4300 kilograms of turmeric and 80 kilograms of cardamom worth over Rs. 27 million in the Pesalai area in Mannar this morning.
The troops of the 543 Brigade attached to the 54 Division on intelligence information received have carried out the raid.
Troops also seized a cab used to transport the consignment of turmeric and cardamom.
The suspect and the stock of turmeric and cardamom were handed over to the Talaimannar Police for further investigations.
Meanwhile, Mannar-based 54 Division troops of the Security Force HQ-Wanni apprehended a suspect with 1560 kilos of smuggled turmeric hidden in a house at Pallimunei at Mannar on Saturday (12), the Ministry of defense said.
The stock of turmeric, valued at Rs. 9.3 million and the suspect were handed over to the Mannar Police for onward investigations.
Also 15 Gemunu Watch troops on the same day have apprehended two suspects along with a stock of 890 kilos of smuggled turmeric valued about Rs. 5.34 million at Kunchikulam roadblock.
The suspects were nabbed while they were transporting the smuggled raw turmeric from Mannar to Kalmunai in a lorry.
The vehicle, the smuggled turmeric and the suspects were handed over to Madhu Police for further investigations.
