Speaking at the National Day celebrations at Galle Face today, President Maithripala Sirisena said that he will oppose forming another National Government.
The President said that he had seen reports of moves to form a National Government.
“I strongly oppose forming a National Government if the National Government is being formed just for the reasons mentioned in the media,” he said.
He also questioned if it is ethical to think of forming a National Government based on a request put forward by one Parliamentarian and one political party.
United National Party (UNP) Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella had last week submitted a proposal to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya saying the United National Front is seeking Parliament approval to form a National Government.
Kiriella had said the National Government will be formed to increase the number of cabinet Ministers.
The President also noted that the Government has failed to ensure a solution to the economic issues faced by the country.
In his speech, the President also criticised the conduct of some Parliamentarians in Parliament in recent times which led to Parliament property being damaged.
