The attempts made by the Archaeological Department to seize the privately owned lands in order to construct a Buddhist Vihara at Naayaru in Mullaitivu district has been halted following the fierce opposition of the people. Without any early announcements in this regard, this attempt has been made by the Archaeological Department stealthily; the people of this are stated. Surveying lands with the intention of constructing a Buddhist Vihara is illegal, the people further added.
This incident took place yesterday while the Buddhist monks who attempted settle at Kurunthumalai by erecting a Buddha statue have been chased away by the youths in that area recently.
Meanwhile, it is noteworthy that Manoganeshan had insisted the Director of the Archaeological Department not to give permission to erect Buddha statue illegally.
