Fierce opposition arose following the Land Commissioner of the Eastern Province had allocated one acre land to construct a Buddhist Vihara at Mayakkallai Mountain.

Buddha Statue was forcibly erected by the monks at Mayakkalli Mountain coming under Irakkaamam Divisional Secretariat Division on 29.10.2016.

The people of this area have been fiercely showing their opposition against the Buddha Statue that was erected at their place non- Buddhists only live.

Meanwhile, D.D.Anura Dharmadasa, the Land Commissioner of the Eastern Province has made a written statement stating that one acre land that is allocated to construct a Buddhist Vihara would be officially handed over by the Irakkaamam Divisional Secretary after demarcating the boundary of this particular land.

In a letter written by the Land Commissioner of the Eastern Province to Kirindawela Somaratna Thero, the Head of the Digamadulla Sri Vidyananda Buddhist School, the above information is mentioned. A copy of this letter has been sent to the Irakkaamam Divisional Secretary. K.L.Sameem, the Organizer of the United Peace Alliance in Irakkaamam area, gave an Objection Petition to the Land Commissioner of the Eastern Province asking him not to provide this particular land to construct a Buddhist Vihara.

Advocate S.S.Faurook and some others of this area have also given an Objection Petition in this regard. Meanwhile, this issue was discussed in the Coordinating Committee meeting of Irakkaamam area held yesterday.

It has been unanimously decided in the Coordinating Committee meeting of Irakkaamam area that land would not be provided to construct a Buddhist Vihara at Mayakkalli Mountain till a solution has met after discussing with the President and the Prime Minister in this regard.

Muslim and Tamil people of this area have doubts that Sinhala settlements will come if this Buddhist Vihara is constructed.
