People of Iranaittivu belonging to Pooneryn Divisional Secretariat have staged an attention drawn struggle yesterday. This attention drawn protest has been staged by the people of Iranaittivu demanding them to be resettled at their native lands. This protest marched from Pooneryn Maha Vidyalayam with the Slogans “Iranaittivu is our native land. Permit us to resettle in our own lands” and reached to the Pooneryn Divisional Secretariat where the Memorandums for the President, Chief Minister of Northern Provincial Council and GA have been handed over to the Divisional Secretary Kirushnantharajah.
Iranaittivu has been being under the control of the occupying Sri Lankan Navy since 1992. The people who uprooted from there have been staying at Iranaimanagar located nearby Mulankavil. Their sole livelihood is fishing. These people are in a pathetic situation as they need to go to sea shore on walk from where they are presently resided in the midst of various inconveniences.
240 families were uprooted from Iranaittivu in 192 and currently stayig at Iranaimanagar. These people demanding the various sections to help them to be resettled in their own lands after the war came to an end. However, steps are yet to be taken. Meanwhile, this attention drawn struggle has been staged.
In the meantime, these people have been permitted by the occupying Sri Lankan Navy for only worshiping the Church located at Iranaittivu.
