CID to investigate false reports of an attempt to assassinate President

The Ministry of Public Security states that an order has been issued to the Criminal Investigation Department to carry out an investigation into a false report that is being circulated on social media that there is an attempt to assassinate the President.

According to the Public Security Ministry there are specific arrangements and procedures for the protection of the President or the Prime Minister when he returns to Sri Lanka after a foreign visit as well as when he leaves Sri Lanka and a specific procedure is followed according to those arrangements.

Generally, these arrangements and measures are notified to the relevant departments when the President or the Prime Minister arrives on the island as well as when he leaves the island.

Such a message given to the Police Department has been released to the media without permission causing an uproar on several websites as well as on social media.

Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles, the, has ordered the Criminal Investigation Department to immediately conduct an investigation in this regard and arrest those who leaked the internal police message to the media and those who spread the false information.

The Ministry states that the Sri Lanka Police has arranged to implement the usual security arrangements for President Ranil Wickramasinghe when he returns to the island after his official visit to France and England.
