Commemoration of 11 fisher folks, who were murdered by the occupying Sri Lankan Army, has been sensationally held at Ponnalai in Jaffna on last Tuesday (29/01).
22nd Memorial Day of 11 fisher folks, who were murdered by the Sri Lankan Army, has been held at Kannan Community Centre on last Tuesday (29/01) evening.
Many including the relatives of the above said fisher folks who were murdered by the Sri Lankan Army, representatives of rural movements and general public took part in this commemoration organized under the leadership of S. Ratheeshwaran.
Main flame has been lit by N. Thevarasa, who lost his father and two brothers in this massacre. Then, the relatives of these fisher folks, who were murdered by the occupying Sri Lankan Army, lit the flames in front of the photos of them. In the continuation of it, others have paid their floral tribute.
Journalist N. Ponrasa delivered the prime address of commemoration. T. Baskaran, the President of the Kannan Community Centre, Sri Jeyaramachandra Arudsothy, the President of the Fisher folks’ Cooperative and M.Komahan, the activist of Venkaram Movement have also addressed in this event.
When the fisher folks, who were waiting in front of the Ponnalai Koththathurai Army Camp for pass, were gun shot by the military soldiers following a claymore mine detonated there on 29th of January in 1997. 9 fisher folks were murdered in this massacre committed by the occupying Sri Lankan Army.
Likewise, 2 fisher folks, who had gone to sea for fishing, were killed by the occupying Sri Lankan Army in 1985.
