The Sri Lanka Amarapura, Ramanna Samagari Maha Sangha Council today urged the government not to pass the 20th Amendment to the Constitution as it has been established that it is a legal norm that seriously hinders the freedom and activism of human thought and returns to an undeveloped tribal society.
“The proposed 20th Amendment rejects the core of democracy, which is one of the progressive elements of humanity, hence it should not be enacted. A new constitution that protects the democracy and rule of law should be drafted,” the Sangha council said in a statement.
At a press conference today, the General Registrars of the two sects informed their decision claiming that the proposed Amendment has many shortcomings.
“The Amarapura-Ramanna Samagari Maha Sangha discussed the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, which is currently causing controversy in the country, and decided to urge the government not to pass it since it seriously hinders the freedom of human thought and activism, which is an advanced feature of human society and proves to be a legal norm that goes back to an undeveloped tribal society.”
The Sangha Sabha said most states in the world follow a policy of check and balance of the three basic elements of democracy – the executive, the legislature and the judiciary and under the 19th Amendment to the Constitution a clear balance was witnessed between the three elements. Under the 20th Amendment however, a dictatorship surrounded around the Executive has been witnessed.
They have urged the Government to draft a new constitution that upholds democracy and rule of law.
