The Sri Lankan government finding difficulty in obtaining state land in the North and East to resettle the remaining displaced families is considering to purchase land from private owners.
The government says following the conflict situation which existed in the Northern and Eastern areas, around 577 internally displaced families still live in 25 welfare camps. Out of these, 381 families have been identified as landless families.
However, allocating state lands to resettle them has become a serious issue due to the scarcity of state lands in the Jaffna area.
The Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, in his capacity as the Minister of National Policies, Economic Affairs, Resettlement & Rehabilitation, Northern Province Development and Youth Affairs has proposed purchasing the lands from the private land owners to resettle the displaced, landless families.
The cabinet of ministers at its regular meeting on Tuesday (April 02) has granted approval to the Prime Minister’s proposal to secure provisions to purchase lands from private owners based on the Chief Valuer’s valuation.
