The government is seeking a two-third majority not to give relief to the masses but to slash the existing benefits, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the leader of Sri Lanka Marxist party, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna says.
Speaking at a press conference held at the JVP head office on 29th of January, the JVP leader said the government has not yet taken steps to resolve salary anomalies of state employees or increased pensions to retirees.
“We demand the government to pay the retirees the increased pension due to them from January and the allowance the executive grade officials have been promised. We also ask the government to implement the recommendations of the salaries commission to remove anomalies in salaries of state employees that have existed for a long time.”
“There was a protracted struggle in our country to find solutions for the anomalies that existed in pension for the retirees and salaries of state employees. The present government joined the struggle white they were in the opposition. As a result several proposals were made regarding solutions for the issues. However, now the present government is evading the proposals one by one,” Dissanayake said.
He said the government does not need a two-third majority to present supplementary estimates in parliament to resolve these issues.
“We ask the government to present supplementary estimates in Parliament for this purpose. Such a move would not require a 2/3rd majority in Parliament. The government is seeking a 2/3rd majority not to give relief to the masses but to slash the existing benefits,” the parliamentarian said.
