India to support strengthening Sri Lanka police, crime control

India’s Minister of Home Affairs Rajnath Singh meeting with the Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that India will support strengthening of Sri Lanka police to control crime.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe during his official visit to India from October 18-20 held bilateral discussions with the Home Affairs Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday in New Delhi on further strengthening cooperation between India and Sri Lanka on issues pertaining to security and terrorism in the region.

The Minister of Home Affairs also told the Premier that 750 jeeps will also be provided to regularize the mobile services of the Sri Lanka Police. The two sides exchanged views on the training courses for Sri Lankan security personnel as well.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe expressed his appreciation to India for their support to Sri Lanka’s crime control process. He said the crime rate has been reduced by 30 percent in the past two years and 90 percent of the complaints have been resolved.

During the discussion, Minister Singh said India will contribute to the development of the Palaly Airport. it is also planned to commence direct flights to Palaly and Batticaloa from South India.

The discussion also focused on taking legal actions against match fixing and illegal betting in Sri Lanka’s cricket field.

Minister Arjuna Ranatunga, who accompanied Premier Wickremesinghe at the discussion, requested India to provide training on technology and security measures to curb the abuses in the sport.

During his successful three-day visit, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe held discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj and other top diplomats as well as the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

The Prime Minister and his delegation which comprised Ministers Arjuna Ranatunga, Malik Samarawickrema and Sagala Ratnayake returned home Saturday night at the conclusion of their three day official visit.
