Killinochchi district has been facing various hardships due to drought. Killinochchi district has been being affected by both torrential raining and heavy drought for a past couple of years. Several parts of this district have been suffering by drought in this year also.
Cattles are hugely affected without grazing. Meadows are no more. Cattle eat dried palamrah leaves and coconut leaves for their hungry. As the water sources became dried, cattle are suffering without water.
People face the shortage of drinking water. About 50 families in Killinochchi district are affected without drinking water. People demand the officials of Pradeshiya Sabha to supply water through water bowsers.
People of Murippu belonging to Karaichchi Divisional Secretariat have been hugely facing the shortage of water. About 250 families have been living in this area. The drinking water well that is where people draw water by walking also became dried. the people of this area get water from Muruppukulam, which is located one kilometer from their residence, for their other fundamental needs.
Though 2000 liters of water is supplied twice a day to Ootrupulam area, people of this area stated that it is not enough for them. People of both Valluvar farm and Navalar farm have also been affected hugely due to drought.
People and cattle are facing shortage of water in Konavil East area also.

Water is died even at the 100 feet depth bore well. Because of that, schools and officers face the shortage of drinking water. It has been urged to supply drinking water to schools, considering it as drought disaster. Schools located at the backward places of Killinochchi district have been worse affected by drought.
Schools located at Pooneryn, Murasumoottai, Tharmapuram, Akkarayan and Vanneri are also getting affected by drought.
Government’s duty
Divisional Secretariats together the District Secretary should protect the people by providing appropriate reliefs in this drought disaster time. Drinking water must be supplied to these people. Rainy season will most probably start the next month, therefore, till that, government officials should take necessary steps to protect the people suffering from the shortage of water.
