Sri Lanka Navy has launched a special investigation into the tense situation arose yesterday between the naval personnel and the villagers of Kandalkadu in Kinniya, Trincomalee.
Navy spokesman Lieutenant Commander Isuru Suriyabandara said that the police are also conducting further investigations into the incident.
The tense situation occurred between Navy personnel and the villagers when the naval officers attempted to raid an illegal sand mining operation in the Kandakadu area in Kinniya yesterday morning.
During the raid two racketeers have jumped into the river to escape and have gone missing.
The villagers have become aggressive and attacked the Navy officers who had then fired into the air to disperse the crowd.
The police and the Special Task Force (STF) police have arrived and controlled the situation. Twelve navy troops were injured in the incident and four seriously injured officers have been admitted to the Trincomalee Hospital.
The body of one of the suspects jumped into the river was found yesterday (22). He was a 22 year old resident of the Kinniya area.
The Navy and the Police have launched further operations in search of the other missing man.
