Nearly 80,000 people have been affected by floods in the North and parts of the Central province as of today.
The Disaster Management Centre said that around 73,000 people have been affected in the Northern Province.
Around 38,534 have been affected in the Kilinochchi District and around 20737 in Mulaitivu.
The Disaster Management Centre said that 12,642 have been affected in the Jaffna District as of this afternoon.
Over 10,000 people affected by flash floods in the North have been sheltered in temporary camps.
More than 230 troops have been engaged in relief operations since heavy rains lashed the North on Saturday.
Meanwhile, in the Kandy District in the Central province, around 890 people have been affected by flash floods.
President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed relevant authorities to provide immediate relief to the people affected by the heavy rains and floods.
All necessary facilities will be provided to the people in the threatened areas until the floods subside, the President’s office said.
President Sirisena has instructed the relevant authorities to release funds to the district secretaries promptly.
The President has also instructed the Governor of the Northern Province, District Secretaries, the Army Commander and the Disaster Management Centers to carry out relief programs expeditiously.
