There may be more than 30,000 people infected with the COVID-19 coronavirus in the city of Colombo, says Colombo Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ruwan Wijemuni.
Dr. Wijemuni told media that in PCR tests conducted on 300 randomly selected people in the city, 5 percent of them were found to be infected and accordingly 5 percent of the 600,000 people in the city of Colombo are suspected to be infected.
He noted that 80 percent of infected people do not show any symptoms but they are carriers of the disease and that only 5 percent of infected people show symptoms.
Dr. Wijemuni pointed out that only 0.4 percent of the people who show these symptoms die due to the seriousness of the disease.
He said that the people living in Colombo should be especially careful as the disease can be present in anyone’s body without showing any symptoms.
Dr. Wijemuni comparing the current situation of patients to a top of an iceberg in the ocean said that it should not be forgotten that a large part of the iceberg may not be visible.
