The Extraordinary Gazette notification dissolving Parliament would be published tonight by the Government Printers after the President placed his signature by virtue of powers vested in him.
Accordingly, the general election will be held on April 25, 2020, while nominations would be accepted between March 12 and 19. The new Parliament is to meet on May 14, 2020.
The minimum term of four-and-a-half years necessary to dissolve the eighth parliament of Sri Lanka in terms of the provisions of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was completed by midnight on Sunday (1) and the President has the power to dissolve parliament at any time after the minimum term is completed.
The Gazette notification has outlined details about the political parties, their registered symbols and deposits.
The eighth parliamentary session started on September 1, 2015, and the four and half year team ended on March 1.
