Venerable Athuraliye Rathana Thero ended his fast-unto-death campaign after learning that Western Province Governor Azath Salley and Eastern Province Governor M.L.A.M. Hizbullah had resigned from their respective posts.
The Thero commenced a fast-unto-death campaign outside the Sri Dalada Maligawa temple in Kandy on May 31 demanding the removal of Minister Rishad Bathiudeen, Eastern Province Governor MLAM Hizbullah and Western Province Governor Azath Sally from their posts.
Meanwhile, protests in support of the fasting monk spread across the island prompting fears of mass scale unrest.
The governors, appointed by the President, have then decided to resign in the wake of protests staged in many major cities.
Following the announcement of the governors’ resignations by the President’s Media Division, the Central Province Governor Maithri Gunaratne has informed Rathana Thero and the Thero ended the. Athuraliye Rathana Thero was then taken to Kandy Hospital for observation.
Following the governors’ actions the entire collective of Muslim ministers in the government including Minister Rishad Bathiudeen have resigned from their portfolios.
