Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says the Government is dedicated to conduct all the elections on schedule and every attempt will be made to hold the provincial council elections in due time.
However, the Prime Minister stressed that to hold elections immediately, every party has to come to an agreement on an electoral system, and decide whether to hold the elections under the old system or the new system or whether to revise the existing system if elections were to be held next year.
“This should be immediately sorted out,” he said.
He said the regardless of the results, the local government elections were held according to the new system, and that is the nature of the democracy.
However, it is difficult for all political parties to reach an agreement on an electoral system, the Prime Minister added.
The Prime Minister expressed these views speaking at the opening of the Construct Exhibition 2018 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall yesterday.
The Premier presented awards to several individuals on behalf of their services for the uplift of the construction sector. Minister of Housing and Construction Sajith Premadasa joined in this occasion.
