President Maithripala Sirisena has named UPFA MP M.L.A.M. Hisbullah, Colombo Municipal Councillor Azath Sally, who is also the leader of the National Unity Alliance (NUA) and leader of the United National Freedom Front (UNFF) Maithree Gunaratne as Governors of the Eastern, Western and Central Province, respectively.
Hisbullah was accommodated in parliament on the National List following the 2015 August parliamentary polls. President Sirisena’s move will create a National List vacancy.
President Sirisena last week directed Governors to quit by Dec 30, 2018.
Hisbullah, Sally and Gunaratne replaced Rohitha Bogollagama, Hemakumara Nanayakkara and P.B. Dissanayake, respectively.
President Sirisena also replaced Governor M.G. Jayasinghe (North Central) and Governor K.C. Logeswaran (North Western) with Sarath Ekanayake and Peshala Jayaratne Bandara, respectively.
None of those who had quit their posts following presidential directive received appointments yesterday.
Governors are yet to be appointed for the Northern, Sabaragamuwa, Uva and Southern Province.
Government sources told The Island that it was not yet clear whether Reginald Cooray (North), Sabaragamuwa (Niluka Ekanayake), Uva (Ariya Rekewa) and South (Marshal Perera) would receive appointments as Governors.
