“Neither the SLPP camp nor the UNP camp could install a new president of their own without the support of the SLFP. No party could win the Presidential election without garnering 6.5 million votes because the winning candidate should obtain 50 percent plus another one vote of the total votes cast.” Sri Lanka Freedom Party National Organiser Duminda Dissanayaka in Talawa yesterday.
Speaking at a ceremony in Kongollewa, near Talawa, the SLFP parliamentarian said: “At the last local government elections the SLPP polled five million votes against the UNP’s 3.5 million votes and the SLFP’s 1.5 million votes”.
“The five million votes received by the SLPP would be insufficient for it to win the presidential election without SLFP support.
“The same is true as regards the UNP. No party could win the Presidential election without the SLFP which would be the deciding factor,” he said.
The SLFP will announce its final decision about the forthcoming presidential election within the next few weeks, Dissanayaka said.
He said that he hoped that the broad coalition to contest the forthcoming Presidential election will be formed after successful discussions before the SLFP anniversary celebrations on September 2.
