A 23-year-old Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) supporter, resident in Hemmathagama, has been arrested by the Hemmathagama Police for allegedly abducting and sexually assaulting a 26-year-old mentally retarded woman who attended the SLPP election rally held at Kegalle on November 7 night.
The incident had occurred while the girl accompanied by her mother was returning home in the bus along with a crowd which attended the rally on that day.
The suspect, who was among a group of youth who attended the rally, had, along with others, reportedly befriended the girl on their way back from the rally and got her to alight from the bus in a forested area and seduced her after promising to many her”, Police said.
Investigations revealed that the girl was suffering from a mental disability. When the mother returned home without bringing the girl along, her father had got agitated and complained to Hemmathagama Police on the Police hotline (119) around 10.30 pm that night. The Police had followed the bus route had found the girl abandoned about one and a half kilometres away from her home. The 23-year-old youth resident in Hemmathagama had left the girl after abusing her, Police investigations revealed.
The girl was due to be produced for a medical examination.
