Measures have been taken to provide special relief to sir Lanka’s tri forces from this year’s budget. A number of allowances for the armed forces have been raised after 20 years.
Presenting the budget in parliament earlier this week, Minister of Finance Mangala Samaraweera said although allowances for the Police Department were increased in the past two years, some allowance for the tri forces have not been increased in 20 years.
Accordingly, the Commando Allowance, Uniform Allowance, Rent Allowance and the Good Conduct Allowance of the Armed Forces, will be increased from 1st July 2019.
The rate of Housing Rent Allowance paid in the month of January 2019 will be increased by 100%
Commando Allowance will be increased from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 5,000 per month. It will be applied to equal ranks of Sri Lanka Navy and Sri Lanka Air Force.
Uniform Upkeep Allowance will be increased according to the rank. For brigadier or equal rank and above the allowance will be increased from current Rs. 255 to Rs. 600. The allowance for Colonel or equal rank and below will be increased from current Rs. 255 to Rs. 525 and for other ranks the allowance will be raised from current Rs. 170 to Rs. 350.
Accordingly, it has been decided to allocate Rs. 1.175 billion for the allowances given to the Sri Lanka military.
