The Police Headquarters has commenced a special investigation into the sudden departure of the former OIC of the Gang Robbery Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department, Inspector Nishantha Silva, to Switzerland without permission from the Police Department.
A senior police official said the investigation has been initiated to inquire why actions have not been taken against IP de Silva by the police authorities when he had handed over his official residence, official vehicle and the firearms to the CID and also got the leave approved before he left the country.
The official said certain high ranking officials of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) as well as its administrative unit and transport unit should take responsibility for Nishantha Silva’s leaving the country.
He said that several police officers with firearms have been deployed to protect Nishantha Silva and it is also questionable why they remained silent.
The Police Special Investigation Unit (SIU) which is conducting the investigation in this regard has recorded statements from several police officers including the former Director of CID SSP Shani Abeysekara and former ASP B. S. Tissera. More statements are scheduled to be recorded from other officers as well, police sources said.
