Foreign Relations, Skills Development, Employment and Labour Relations Minister Dinesh Gunawardena yesterday said that he and his delegation are ready to answer any question and allegation regarding human rights and accountability issues in the final days of the ongoing sessions at the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
He further said co-sponsoring the resolution 40 of March 2019 on Sri Lanka at UNHRC contravene, the Constitution of Sri Lanka and also against the interests of the people of Sri Lanka. Therefore, the government expects to withdraw the co-sponsoring of the resolution.
The Minister made these remarks after receiving the blessings of the Chief Incumbent of Dharmayathanaya, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7 Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thera before leaving the country to attend the session at the UNHRC.
The Minister further said that the shackles enforced by the Western nations on Sri Lanka must be unchained one by one and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has received massive mandate to implement that.
The previous UNF government’s conduct was unbecoming and detrimental to the interests of Sri Lanka and moreover the TNA was also making anti-Sri Lankan statements at various international fora which is very much harmful to the country.
Foreign Relations Minister Dinesh Gunawardene left for Geneva yesterday to participate at the 43rd the session of UN Human Rights Council .
Minister Gunawardene is expected to participate at the 43rd session of the UN Human Rights Commission on February 26 and 27. Foreign Relations Ministry sources said that UN Human Rights Chief Michelle Bachelet is expected to respond to the submissions made by Sri Lanka on February 27.
Minister Dinesh Gunawardene is also scheduled to call on a number of dignitaries including the Director General of International Labour Organization and the Secretary General of International Parliamentary Union during his stay in Geneva.
The 43th session of the UNHRC is to review the human rights situation in 47 countries including Sri Lanka.
