President Maithripala Sirisena says the Tamils have been misled to think that a new Constitution will be passed this year.
Speaking at an event in Horana, the President said that he does not believe a new Constitution will be passed this year as there are elections.
The President said that he feels moves to bring a new Constitution were initiated purely to scuttle the minds of the public.
Sirisena said that talk of a new Constitution has been going on for four years and he does not think it will be implemented this year as this is the year of elections which could lead to a possible change of Government.
“I have no idea how this new Constitution is being designed, I have not seen it,” he added.
The President noted that the new Constitution is only being discussed in Parliament and a committee report was also submitted last month.
However he said that he feels the entire process is purely with the intention of creating instability in the South and misleading the Tamils in the North.
The President said that while he feels there is a need for Constitutional amendments, he says the amendment should be focused only on ensuring a stable Parliament.
