Congratulating Sri Lanka for celebrating its 72nd anniversary of Independence, the United States said it looks forward to deepening ties with South Asian island nation.
In a press statement issued Monday Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo said the United States steadfastly supports Sri Lanka’s vibrant democracy and its sovereignty as the relationship between the two nations is based on common democratic values and both countries share a commitment to ensure the peace in the Indo-pacific region.

On behalf of the people of the United States, I send my best wishes to Sri Lanka as you celebrate the 72nd anniversary of your independence on February 4.
Our relationship is based on common democratic values, and the United States steadfastly supports Sri Lanka’s vibrant democracy and its sovereignty. We share a commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region that ensures peace, economic growth, security, democracy, and human rights for the advancement of our peoples. I look forward to deepening our ties in the year ahead and working together toward a bright future for both our countries.
As a close friend and partner, the United States congratulates you on Sri Lanka’s Independence Day, and I extend my warmest wishes for peace and prosperity in the coming year.
