Minister of Plantation Industries Navin Dissanayake and the US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Alaina B. Teplitz held a lengthy discussion today (12) at the Ministry premises in Sethsiripaya, Battaramulla.
The discussion focused on tea, coconut, rubber, sugar and cashew plantation sectors.
During the meeting, the Minister and the Ambassador discussed especially, the status of Sri Lankan Tea in the US and its potential in the US market. The export situation of the tea industry was also discussed.
The US Ambassador also promised to look into the possibility of providing solar panels to those in the plantation industry sector, especially in the tea industry.
The ambassador said that the U.S. hopes to provide financial assistance to Sri Lanka as a five-year project for the E Land Registration program and to develop infrastructure such as and Road Development.
The Minister requested the Ambassador to provide more financial assistance to develop the roads in Nuwara Eliya, Matale and Uva Province.
The US Ambassador also discussed the transport sector in Sri Lanka and said that she expects to provide financial assistance for a planned process to reduce traffic congestion in Sri Lankan cities.
The Minister also requested to provide more opportunities for the Sri Lankans to study at U.S. universities to obtain their technical knowledge.
State Minister of Plantation Industries Vadivel Suresh, Secretary to the Ministry of Plantation Industries JA Ranjith and other high officials of the Ministry were also present at the occasion.
